Cuttack: The Orissa High Court Bar Association (OHCBA) president Gopal Krushna Mohanty on Friday announced that future course of their cease work will be decided at the next general body meeting of the OHCBA scheduled to be held at 1 PM on October 21.
Mohanty said that decision on the cease work will be taken at the general body meeting after the hearing of the suo motu contempt case by the 14 member bench of the High Court.
He added that cease work in Cuttack will continue till October 21.
“Most of the 68 bar associations which were served with contempt notice attended today’s meeting, 37 out of them have given us the responsibility to take care of the suo motu contempt proceedings against them. Tomorrow we will decide on what stand we will be taking for them,” informed Mohanty after a meeting of the all Odisha Bar Associations here today.
The OHCBA has been demanding for the abolition of the collegium system in the appointment of judges and introduction of National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) for appointment of judges in High Courts of the country.
The OHCBA had called for a meeting of the All Odisha Bar Association today in this connection.
“93 bar associations were present today. They unanimously extended their support to the cause of the High Court Bar. They also gave an assurance to remain with High Court Bar. All of them expressed solidarity with our demand for filling up of posts of judges. All them felt that if vacancies of judges were not filled up people of Odisha will be deprived of justice and we will be forced to resort to agitation,” the OHCBA president stated.
It may be mentioned here that a 14 member bench of the Orissa High Court after registering a suo motu contempt case had issued notices to 68 Bar Associations on the issue of cessation of court work by lawyers.
