Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Mruntunjay Mohapatra, chief of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been appointed as a permanent representative of India with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The renowned scientist and cyclone warning specialist Mr Mohapatra and his team had earned accolades for their accurate forecast during the recent cyclone ‘Fani’.
The timely warnings, forecast on Fani, its wind-speed and likely impact on life and property enabled the government authorities to ensure timely evacuation of millions of people thereby ensuring minimal casualties.
Known for his cyclone forecasts, Mr. Mohapatra leads the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD. Over the last six years, the CWD has given accurate forecasts on cyclones including when Phailin (2013), Hudhud (2014) and Titli (2018) hit the eastern coast.
Prior to joining the IMD, he was working in Chandipur’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory during the first Agni missile test in 1988.
Hailing from Bhadrak district of Odisha, Mohapatra always wanted to be a weather forecaster as his village was often devastated by cyclones bringing large scale destruction and casualties.
