**Bhubaneswar: ** Two helmetless bike-borne miscreants on Tuesday were chased and rounded up the police personnel here for allegedly attacking the traffic cops on duty with knife at the AG Chhak.
As the two bikers were riding vehicle breaching traffic rules, the deployed traffic cops intercepted them when a heated argument ensued and following which the two miscreants allegedly went amok and resorted to attacking the police personnel with a knife.
In the commotion, a traffic policeman on duty there unfortunately got his throat slit, while two of his other colleagues sustained serious injuries on hand and shoulder respectively.
They were immediately rushed to the Capital Hospital here.
After committing the crime, the miscreant duo tried to fled the spot when other police personnel chased them and could catch hold of them.
The two attackers are now in the police dragnet.
This incident took place when the traffic personnel were carrying out their routine helmet checking at the junction.
The attacked traffic cops have been identified as Gyana Ranjan Das, Mahendra Biswal and Rohan Swain.
Bhubaneswar Traffic ACP Jatin Panda told media soon after the incident, “As anti-socials, criminals as well general commuters use traffic, such incident may happen with us. It’s a part of our job. Following such an incident, we need to be more alert and cautious. During the motor vehicle (MV) checking, we’re ignorant of the knowhow and character of the people nor ready to react to such attacks. Nowhere in any other States police force is deployed during the routine MV checking. If a person does not fork out fine money during the checking, we forward the case to court where the breach of traffic rules is settled. Those arrested were two on a bike and had not worn helmet following which they were halted and the requisite documents were being enquired. In a fit of rage, the youth pulled out a knife from his bag possessing fruits. The enforcement squad deployed there could catch them. They have been handed over to Capital Police Station and an FIR has been filed.”
