Bhubaneswar: Humanity was shamed in an utterly disgraceful incident which occurred in Cuttack Road area of the City on Tuesday. A 40-year-old man, Parvinder Pal Singh was beaten black and blue by hooligans, over a trivial issue. To the surprise of many, police personnel patrolling the area were mute spectators to the assault.
The incident has left Parvinder humiliated, badly injured and shocked. The businessman is now willing to leave Odisha and return back to Punjab.
“My complaint, CCTV footage, identity of the accused and eye-witnesses’ account, all forms of telling evidence were available, yet the police took more than 24 hours to nab the prime accused,” the victim alleged.
Parvinder added that his complaint was not taken seriously by the police initially.
After nursing his wounds at a local hospital, he rushed to Laxmi Sagar police station and filed an FIR at around 4 pm. But the response of the duty officer was half-hearted, said Parvinder. “Only after the CCTV footage was broadcast on TV in the night, my complaint was registered.”
The incident occurred in front of an apartment where Parvinder lives with his family. He was just back from school with his two daughters aged about six and eight years. A group of youths were standing in front of the apartment with the car which blocked the way to the basement.
“I simply requested them to move the vehicle aside so that I could get in and they started hurling abuses. I decided not to react and went home. However, I reported the matter to police over Dial 100.”
A PCR van showed up at the spot and the SPO called Parvinder to resolve the dispute. As soon as he came down, the youths started beating Parvinder with blows and punches, even with bricks.
“My little children are in a state of shock. They were crying while I was being beaten but no one came to our help. Who would dare to, when the police was hesitating to challenge the might of the ex-Corporator’s son,” said Parvinder.
The 40-year-old is now willing to wind up his business and return back to Punjab because his family is not feeling safe in the city.
DCP Anup Sahoo said that three persons – Sankar Rout, Deepak Mohanty and Deepak Jena have been arrested and were produced before the court today. Besides, Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi has directed Laxmi Sagar police to submit the charge sheet within three days.
