Berhampur: In a shocking incident, six women were arrested by Baidyanathpur police for allegedly branding a minor girl with hot iron at Kumbharpalli village here on March 12.

According to reports, the minor girl was allegedly tortured by her step-mother inside their home in the presence of five women neighbours after she came late from sewing training classes on March 11.

After getting information about this incident, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) reached the place along with Baidyanathpur police and rescued the minor.

Besides the victim girl's step-mother Gurubari Sahu (main accused), the other arrested have been identified as A.Jogi Reddy, G.Neelamma Reddy, Mahalaxmi Reddy, K.Ratnalu Reddy and Sukanti Sahu of the same locality.

The police admitted the injured girl to the local hospital and her condition was stated to be stable.

Berhampur Additional SP, Shantanu Kumar Das told media, “As per the preliminary investigation, it has been found that the minor girl has been physically tortured by her step-mother and neighbours.”

“Whatever may be the reason, physical torture to a minor is against the law and after completion of investigation, the accused will be punished”, he added.

But Gurubari, the step-mother, in her defense said that she tortured the girl out of anger since she had an affair with a guy which she did not approve of.

She also claimed to be the sole accused as the other women had rushed into their home as the girl raised an alarm.

The police have detained all six women and are investigating into the matter.
