Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court of India has rejected the bail plea of Sarathi Baba, the self-styled godman of Odisha in connection with the case of sexual exploitation of a woman and her daughter at his Barimula Ashram situated in Kendrapara district.
His bail plea was rejected by a two-member division bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
Notably, the controversial self-styled godman Sarathi Baba had been arrested by the Odisha Crime Branch from his Barimula Ashram in August 2016 and was charged with forgery, cheating and criminal intimidation.
After his arrest, a mother-daughter duo had lodged a complaint that the ‘godman’ had sexually exploited them and even defrauded them of their money and jewellery and even land.
Sarathi had moved Supreme Court on December 2016 seeking bail in two cases against him concerning the female medico and the one involving the woman and her daughter from Barimula in Kendrapara district.
He was earlier granted bail in the case of alleged sexual harassment of the controversial female medico, but not in the mother-daughter case.
He is presently lodged at the Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack district.
