**Nabrangpur**: A family of three has been socially ostracized in a village after a handful of villagers spread rumours about the irreversible consequences of the illness, and also that anyone who comes in touch with the man and his family will contract the disease.
The man lives in Aunli village under Papadahandi block of Odisha’s Nabrangpur district. He and his family are being barred from attending social functions and even drawing water or purchasing grocery items from the shops in village. In other words, they are boycotted by the villagers at the behest of a few.
The patient was diagnosed HIV positive in 2016, after which he was given a card and was availing government’s free medicines and compensation. But recently, he was totally ostracized by the villagers.
He lodged a complaint against four villagers in Maidalpur Outpost. He has alleged that the four of them have spread all sorts of rumours regarding his disease and has barred him from attending any social functions or use any of the village’s utilities. So much so, anything he touches is thrown away by the villagers.
He has also been threatened to leave the village or else they would burn his house and excommunicate him.
It is worth mentioning that he is the only one suffering from the disease but his family is also facing the same consequences.
