Bhubaneswar: In an amazing turn of event, senior Congress leader and former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Niranjan Patnaik turned up to express his solidarity with the agitating Odisha farmers amid the current political scenario in which his younger brother Soumya Ranjan Patnaik has embraced ruling BJD and has also filed his nomination for the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls as BJD ticket holder.

It attracted the media attention on Tuesday as Soumya Ranjan Patnaik was the ace crusader of the Odisha Nabanirman Krushak Sangh and fought against the State Government of which he is ironically now a part and parcel. Earlier, Soumya had also been arrested during the massive stir launched by the Odisha farmers demanding ‘Price, Prestige & Pension’.

The ongoing indefinite ‘Satyagraha’ of the Odisha farmers is hell bent on its same demands sans their erstwhile champion Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.

In his media reactions, the senior Congress leader said, “I’ve joined the agitating farmers here on my own. No one (hinting at his brother and Congress party) has sent me here. I’m not representing any party.” On being prodded on his younger brother Soumya Ranjan Patnaik’s present stand and switching of sides, the elder brother defended, “Joining BJD doesn’t mean that he has deserted the farmer issue. Has he said no to it?”

“I’m always with the farmers,” he claimed.
