Bhubaneswar: As the BJD-led Odisha Government on Wednesday planned to move the Supreme Court to challenge the Orissa High Court verdict barring the State Government from providing beyond 50% reservation of seats for the ST and SC candidates in the upcoming municipal elections, the Supreme Court moving plan has come under the butt of criticism from opposition Congress and BJP suspecting BJD Government’s alibi to avert the civic polls fearing electoral loss.

In his media reactions, senior Congress MLA Jacob Pradhan said, “Last time the State Government could have challenged it in the Supreme Court. This State Government is not sincere about conducting the municipal elections timely. They (BJD Government) wish to directly usurp power without conducting the municipal election. Perhaps they are planning to conduct the civic poll after the general elections (assembly and parliament elections).”

“That’s why the BJD Government is taking a plea of challenging the High Court order in the Supreme Court,” the Congress leader quipped.

Odisha BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra reacted, “The rate of public support for the State Government is declining day by day. Bijepur by-poll is the glaring example as the BJD instead of fielding its own party candidate, imported from Congress. Even at later stage, they are in process of hijacking leaders and workers from other parties.”

“It all implies that this State Government’s inefficiency and policy paralysis have made the people aware following which the BJD party is apprehensive that it would lose the municipal polls. If that happens, it would severely impact the general elections. For this apprehension, the Supreme Court drama is being enacted,” he lambasted.

On the contrary, former Odisha Housing & Urban Development Minister and senior BJD MLA Puspendra Singhdeo defended, “Whatever the opposition parties criticize, it’s unjust. Seat reservation is a big issue and in order to give justice to the common man, our State Government is always alert.”

“So far the allegation is levelled against our government that we’re moving the Supreme Court to avoid election, it’s totally wrong and baseless. BJD is the only party, who under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, is always ready to face any poll. It has also come out as No1 party in all the poll outcomes. Hence, BJD is never afraid of any elections,” the senior BJD MLA countered.

He argued, “When High Court has given a verdict, Government will definitely analyse and take a decision on it. Government has already begun the process for the municipal election. When the issue of reservation comes, it is obvious that the Government will take necessary action in a bid to give justice to the people as a whole as well as of different categories.”
