**New Delhi:** Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu have rejected the Congress-led opporsition parties notice to impeach the Chief Justice Of India (CJI) Dipak Misra. He cited the lack of substantial merit in the notice.
Sixty-four members of the Rajya Sabha belonging to seven parties led by the Congress on Friday submitted the [impeachment motion](https://www.ommcomnews.com/public/all-you-need-to-know-about-procedure-of-impeachment-motion-of-judge-in-india) for the removal of the Chief Justice on five grounds of “misbehaviour”.
The motion was signed by 71 MPs, but seven have since retired before it was submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chair.
Besides the Congress, those who signed the motion include members of the Samajwadi Party, BSP, CPI-M, CPI, NCP and IUML. Nominated member K.T.S. Tulsi also signed.
This is the first time an impeachment motion has been brought against a Chief Justice of India.
The motion listed five charges of misbehaviour, including an alleged conspiracy to pay illegal gratification in a case relating to an educational trust and the manner in which the CJI had dealt with the case by denying permission to the CBI to register an FIR against a Judge of the Allahabad High Court when the CBI shared incriminating information.
