Bhubaneswar: A dispute between two locals groups on Diwali night over bursting of crackers turned violent and resulted in one youth’s death and another two suffering injuries. The incident occurred late last night near Sundarpada area under Airfield Police limits here, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar, Anup Kumar Sahoo.

The deceased has been identified as Amaresh Nayak of BDA Colony of Sundarpada area, said Police report.

The dispute reportedly arose at about 12 am between Amaresh’s group and another youth over location of bursting of crackers. The discussion became a heated argument and the youth brought his group of about 12-15 people who then attacked Amaresh and co. They repeatedly thrashed Amaresh and left him in a bloodied state, said Police report.

He was immediately rushed to Capital Hospital, where the doctors declared him ‘brought dead’, said DCP Sahoo.

Amaresh’s associate Hicky, who also got injured in this attack, alleged that even though they had a minor argument with other gang, they had resolved it. He charges the other gang of inciting violence resulting in murder. Sunderpada ex-Corporator Montu Nanda was allegedly part of this gang.

Meanwhile, Nanda alleged that his name was unnecessarily embroiled in this matter and he was not in any way involved in this group clash. He was called to the Airfield Police station late last night but was let go after interrogation.

Speaking on this matter, DCP Sahoo said, “The scientific team inspected the whole scene and collected samples. Several unblasted cracker bombs were found on the scene, however it is yet to be ascertained whether they were planted before or after the murder.”

“It has also come to fore that there are several cases lodged against the deceased and others identified in this case. We have discerned a few of the accused and the search for the rest is underway. A probe has been initiated and more details will follow,” said DCP Anup Kumar Sahoo.
