Cuttack: Seventeen days after his wrongful arrest, due to the mistake of an Investigating Officer (IO), Chandan Maharana was released on bail on Wednesday, but is yet to be declared innocent by the court.

Reportedly, the Commissionerate Police had arrested Chandan for his alleged involvement in a loot case in Sikharpur area of Cuttack in 2013.

Later on March 23, Commissioner of Police Satyajit Mohanty accepted the mistake after locals alleged that Chandan was not involved in any such case and his arrest is the case of mistaken identity.

Mohanty had stated Commissionerate Police have prayed the court to reopen the case and have explained everything to them. He had also assured that Chandan will be released soon and the real person who has done the mischief will be caught.

When Chandan was not released even after two days, his family brought him out on bail. They have now demanded the Commissioner should fulfill his promise and the court should declare Chandan as innocent.

Speaking out against the harassment meted out to Chandan, his family members have decided to move the Human Rights Commission and demand compensation.

Even Chandan said he will even move the Supreme Court if required to seek action against his perpetrators, including the investigating officer.
