**Dhenkanal**: A carcass of a wild tusker, believed to have died of electrocution was found on Friday morning by the villagers of Hindo in the Denguri jungle of Hindo Forest Range, Dhenkanal.
The forest officials rushed to the spot after being informed, and have started their investigation.
It has been alleged that some of the villagers had laid live electric wires in a bid to hunt wild boars for their meat. The elephant and 2 boars got caught in the trap and lost their lives.
The accused villagers then fled the spot after acquiring the dead boars, leaving the dead jumbo behind.
“When we reached here, we saw the carcass of only the elephant. We did not find any wild boars here, so it is difficult to ascertain the actual reason behind the laying of such live wires in the middle of the jungle,” said Abani Samal, a villager.
“Moreover, this elephant was causing nuisance in the village for quite some time,” he further informed.
Electrocution is one of the common causes of elephant deaths in India. Similar cases have been reported from various parts of Odisha every now and then. The frequency of animal-human conflict has increased over the years damaging the elephant habitat and many elephants are killed every year by accidental electrocution or train hits, as per a survey.
