Soro (Balasore): It all seems that the Triple Talaq Act, criminalizing the inhuman practice by a Muslim husband and penalizing him with three years of jail term, has failed to be a deterrent as Odisha has been witness to the third such offence committed till date in the wake of the law passed by the Parliament.

While the first one was reported from Kendrapara recently, the second one was from Balasore day before yesterday and this third one is also from the same Balasore district.

The latest case reportedly took place on the holy occasion of Eid-al-Adha and the aggrieved wife has lodged a complaint with both the Balasore SP B. Jugal Kishore and Collector K. Sudarshan Chakraborty. The SP has directed the Soro Police Station (PS) IIC to take action basing on the FIR.

While the complainant is Reso Khatun, her accused husband is Sahim Khan of Pathan Mahalla under Soro PS limits.

According to the FIR, complainant Reso Khatun is the daughter of Nasiral Khan of Agarpada Haripur village. She got married to Sahim Khan of Pathan Mahalla under Soro Municipality jurisdiction here as per Islamic Sharia law. During the Nikaah (wedding) solemnized in 2017, the bride had got Rs 80,000 cash and jewellery to her in-laws as dowry. Her father Nasiral Khan had also spent Rs 8 lakh during the wedding of his daughter. She also spent a happy life for sometimes after the marriage.

It has, however, been alleged that both mental and physical torture were meted out to Reso as her husband Sahim decided to marry another girl closely related to the family.

Reso in her FIR has alleged that Sahim has sought divorce from her by instantly uttering the banned and illegal Triple Talaq.
