Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha’s senior political leaders Bijoy Mohapatra and Dilip Ray resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday, speculations are rife on their future course of action.

As per political experts, Bijoy Mohapatra and Dilip Ray are originally anti-Congress even though Dilip Ray had been in Congress for a while before switching over to BJP. However, both are the products of late Biju Patnaik’s legacy. They had been the loyal lieutenants and young Turks of Biju Babu. Even both are deemed to be the founder fathers of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the aftermath of their mentor Biju Babu’s demise in the last part of 1990s.

Nevertheless, both had to quit BJD and choose their respective paths and had eventually joined BJP during the helms of affairs of BJP patriarchs late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani while the present state of BJP affairs revolves round Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his acolyte Amit Shah. But, both have resigned from BJP taking umbrage upon Modi and Shah as well as the saffron party’s Odisha leaderships.

OMMCOM NEWS tried to find it out from political observers what could be the options left behind now for both the seasoned politicians.

Political analyst and senior journalist Rabi Das opined, “Now the first option left behind for them (Bijoy and Dilip) is either to float a regional party or join the regional party recently floated by old colleague Dama Babu (Damodar Rout).”

He added, “Secondly, they are the founder fathers of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). But BJD’s one and only supremo is Naveen Patnaik. Now the big question arises on accepting his leadership. Also BJD’s decision on Bijoy and Dilip is yet unknown.”

“However, Bijoy Mohapatra and Dilip Ray shouldn’t act in such a way so that the general public would question the intent behind re-joining BJD which they had quit long ago due to differences,” remarked the senior scribe.

Another political observer and senior journalist Sandeep Sahu was of the view, “If Bijoy Mohapatra’s recent activities and intent are taken into considerations, it hints at his joining BJD. We should recall that both Bijoy Mohapatra and Dilip Ray were initiated into anti-Congress politics. So, I think that there is less possibility of both joining Congress. They have already quit BJP while the only option left out is BJD.”

He added, “Dilip Ray may not have much problem in re-joining BJD while the BJD leadership is yet to take a decision on Bijoy Mohapatra’s case. So far political information received by us, Dilip doesn’t wish to go back to BJD leaving behind Bijoy. If at last BJD supremo agrees to induct Bijoy Mohapatra, both of them may join the party together.”

“As both have forayed into politics with anti-Congress ideology and Kendrapada is a well-known anti-Congress bastion, the only way out is re-joining BJD. Rest one has to wait and watch,” the senior journalist opined.
