**Sambalpur:** On entering day 2, the 48-hour ‘Maha Bandh’ in western Odisha called by Central Action Committee (CAC) over the demand of establishing a permanent Orissa High Court bench in the region, disrupted daily life in as many as five districts today.
Shops, various educational, business establishments, government offices and markets downed shutters and vehicular traffic was affected in five districts– Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur and Sundargarh–resulting in severe inconvenience for commuters.
Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded along national and state highways due to the bandh. However, emergency services have been kept out of the purview of the strike.
Initiated by the CAC of All-Western Odisha Bar Association (AWOBA), the Maha Bandh has been supported by various lawyer associations of different districts and social and cultural organisation of western Odisha. The agitating lawyers have been resorting to cease-work since November 19 over the demand. However, bar associations of Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Rourkela and Bargarh have refrained from the Maha Bandh, stated reports.
On the other hand, the Joint Action Committee constituted by the Bolangir district lawyers’ association has called for a Bolangir bandh on December 3 demanding permanent High Court bench in Western Odisha.
It has also been decided that the agitating lawyers in Bolangir will observe cease-work from December 1-15 pressing for the fulfillment of their longstanding demand.
