Ganjam: At least six farmers sustained severe injuries after being assaulted by their local Sarpanch of Tentuliapalli panchayat in Khalikote on Wednesday.

The injured persons are undergoing treatment at a local hospital while the farmers’ society secretary Sumitra Palei has lodged a formal complaint with Khalikote police over the matter.

The incident took place in broad daylight when a group of farmers’ society member showed up at the panchayat office and demanded opening up of the ‘Mandi’ for paddy sale.

The local Sarpanch Sulu Swain started arguing with the farmers and objected to their demands. The argument turned ugly following which Swain started beating the farmers. The sequence of events was captured by a local on his mobile camera.
