Bhubaneswar: In response to Union Petroleum Minister and senior BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan’s today’s press meet at New Delhi on the coastal highway and criticizing the BJD-ruled Odisha Government, senior BJD leader and Minister Pratap Jena condemned Centre’s unilateral decision hastily before election.

He argued that Odisha wants coastal highway but without compromising the interests of Odisha and its people.

Convening a press meet here at the BJD State headquarters, Jena burst, “The press conference addressed by Dharmendra Pradhan today at New Delhi has been arranged by some contractors with vested interests.”

He stated, “In 2015, the Union Minister had announced that the coastal highway will be constructed but it was approved by the Union Cabinet after two and half years. Our main question is why the Cabinet’s approval was so late.”

“We have repeatedly discussed with the Central Government and NHAI on the route of the proposed coastal highway. All our opinions have already been placed with both the Central Government and NHAI. But, they want to use the old way without bringing the matter to the notice of State Government. They are taking unilateral stand on it and intend to get it approved,” he alleged.

He also added, “So far we have the information on it, if the plan is materialized, most of the houses on the proposed route will get demolished and they would be evacuated. We demand a brand new route along the coast. The Centre has not yet submitted a clear picture on it nor has intimated the State Government.”

“The coastal road matter has now cropped up because of the election. We want that there should be the coastal highway, but keeping in view Odisha’s nd its people’s interests. Also Odisha’s tourism development should be taken care of. There is no need to do it in a hurry by simply renovating the old road. We condemn it,” the senior BJD leader fumed.
