Keonjhar: Death of an unwell female elephant at the Bhuyan-Juanga-Pidha forest range here on Sunday night has brought the Herpes dace in full focus.

The 25-year old pachyderm had been unwell since September 28. She had been under the care of local Veterinary Assistant and Similipal Veterinarian. Worried that she might have contracted Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus, her blood sample was collected and sent for verification. However, she breathed her last even before the reports came back.

Keonjhar forest range boasts of more than 150 elephants and the recent death brought the fatal Herpes virus’ scare back in the district.

In about a month Odisha has seen five pachyderm deaths due to Herpes and with no known prevention measures and treatment, the State veterinarian staff are at a loss.
