Bhubaneswar: Rape victims are humiliated, disgraced and subjected to untold miseries in the society, during investigation by the police and in the guise of cross examination by defence lawyers. And their misery double when they do not get justice even after such trials and tribulations.

In a first of its kind, the Civil Society Organisation held a public hearing under its president Pradeep Pradhan, an RTI activist at Lohia Academy in Bhubaneswar for the tribal and dalit girls who were sexually harassed and yet to get justice.

The infamous Kunduli rape victim was also present in the public hearing. Even though the Odisha Government has ordered for a judicial probe in this case, the victim narrated her daily ordeal in the village.

“I don’t know how to react. The first doctor who examined me had confirmed that it was a rape but the government agencies are denying the fact. My friends and relatives often ask me that what actually happened. Was I really raped or not? I am still living in threat and yet to get justice,” said the Kunduli victim.

Another 13-yr-old victim who was raped by a 35-yr-old man in Delanga has a more harrowing tale. According to her mother, “That man raped her while she was going to school. He had threatened her of killing her whole family if she divulged the incident to anyone. So my daughter kept mum. To our utter shock, she gave birth to a baby eight months later. Now she is in a shelter home with the baby yet to get justice. I have knocked the doors of Mahila Commission, police, etc but it did not yield any results. The rapist is still at large.”

According to RTI activist Pradeep Pradhan,”We have brought these victims under one roof for a public hearing so that their case will be highlighted through media and they would get justice as soon as possible.”

The parents of three victims had come as their daughters were not only raped but also murdered. The parents of a minor girl studying in 10th class had come for this public hearing as she was raped and murdered in Adagaon village of Derabish block in Puri district.

Similarly, the parents of a college student hailing from Damodarpur village of Sukinda block in Jajpur district also seek justice as she was sexually assaulted and killed mysteriously.

Another heart-rending case of 2015 also came into forefront. A minor girl of Sargipalli village in Bolangir district had been brutally raped and murdered when she had gone to take a bath in the nearby canal. Her body was found in dilapidated condition and her private parts were severely injured with sharp objects.
