Puri: A spotted deer was killed and another injured after falling in an uncovered drain in Balighat area of Puri district. The mishap had reportedly occurred when the duo from Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary had visited the area in search of food and water last night.

Today morning, locals discovered the injured deer struggling to come out of the drain when they rescued it and also fished out body of its companion. On being informed, forest officials reached the spot and took both the injured and dead deer into their custody.

Meanwhile, locals alleged though the drain has already claimed many lives earlier, including that of a child few months back, the district administration is not taking any action in this regard.

Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of the sanctuary Prasant Kumar Swain said the deers have a tendency to visit the area to feed on the gram and rice crops which are very palatable. However, during their return they sometimes fall in the 6-feet-deep drain due to track disturbance.

He said the forest department has taken various steps in this regard and have also written a letter to the PWD Junior Engineer. Swain assured of reminding the engineer again about the issue and will also gear up the protection activity in the area from today evening.

Executive Engineer of PWD Priyabrata Samantaray said agreed that the forest deparment had intimated them about the issue but they are not covering the drains in town areas as such drains if once covered are completely choked with garbage. Keeping the drains open helps in cleaning as a result of which they will remain functional.

He further said, the department will identify the areas where death of deers have been reported and take appropriate steps in this regard like covering of drains in that areas.
