Bhubaneswar: While the bifurcation of Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD) is on cards, the Commissionerate Police has also planned to appoint a permanent Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic, informed Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty on Friday.

Mohanty said efforts are on to strengthen the traffic wing of Commissionerate Police. While 160 traffic constables have already been recruited and are undergoing training, the Odisha Government has doubled the number of student traffic volunteers.

Presently there is no permanent post of DCP (Traffic) and DCP (Training) Bijay Kumar Sahu has been given the additional charge of traffic. A DCP (Traffic) will be exclusively appointed as he can give more time for the training, he added.

Mohanty further informed that over 1 lakh vehicles are being registered in Bhubaneswar annually. Therefore, the existing road is unable to deal with such increase in traffic. Digital or Electronic Signal System can be a solution for the issue.

However, as Bhubaneswar is on the way of being developed into a metro city, there is also need of road engineering including flyovers at busy junctions and six lanes or eight lanes wherever possible, he added.
