Bhubaneswar: In a shocking revelation, Odisha Consumer Welfare Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain today said that during raids it has come to fore that reputed and top names in jewellery business in the State also those in Bhubaneswar have been cheating consumers in weight and purity.
Citing instances Swain revealed that jewellers cheat consumers by offering items of 14-carat purity but charge for 22-carat purity.
The other way adopted is cheating by weight, he added.
"It has also come to our notice that top and reputed houses of Bhubaneswar who put up advertisements in newspapers and television are also involved in such unfair practice," the Minister revealed.
While saying that raids for detecting frauds by way of weights and measures were a continuous process and will continue, the Minister informed that his department has speeded up raids, nearly 40 organisations have been fined in the last ten days which include top and reputed names.
He said that his department has speeded up raids following concern expressed in the State Assembly.
