Balangir: Online fraud amounting to Rs 70,000 forced a youth to take the drastic step of suicide and to let the world know of his helpless situation he shot a video of himself where he describes in detail his ordeals.

Pratap Barik had committed suicide at Titlagarh railway station on January 18. The cause behind his sad death was not clear then, but the release of a video and the pictures on his phone today reveal a much murkier detail.

In the video, Pratap narrates the online scam that he got trapped into. He says that a few days he received a call from a person called Rana Singh who informed him that he had won a lottery of Rs 25 lakh in popular show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). However, he was asked to deposit Rs 70,000 in four instalments in separate bank accounts to avoid tax deductions.

He ends his video by saying that he is about to commit to suicide as he has realised that this was all a fraud and pleads Police to find the accused.

While Police are trying to ascertain the credibility of the video, it also brings to fore the harsh realities of online fraud.

On Google search, we found that several such cases of fraud messages related to KBC have been reported by citizens around the country. Ominously, this is not the first cheating case in the name of KBC and other reality shows. Therefore, you should remain cautious and extremely careful before sharing details or depositing money. Also, file a complaint in the nearest police station as early as possible in case of such fake calls.

Most importantly, if any time someone asks you to deposit money in an unknown bank account and that the prize money will be handed thereafter, is a fraudster. No institution, whether a bank or any company will ask you to deposit money in such a manner.
