Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi Government of leaving the future of India's youth in jeopardy, citing a National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) survey that says unemployment was at a 45-year high of 6.1 per cent during 2017-2018.

"The promise of 2 crore jobs turned out to be a joke. Instead the unemployment rate is at a 45-year high. This is why the NSSO report was kept under wraps. This is why members of NSC [National Statistical Commission] resigned," the BJD leaders said.

Training guns at the Centre, BJD IT Cell Chief, Amar Patnaik said that it was due to the haphazard and arbitrary financial policies of the Centre, skilled youths of the country are jobless.

"Most of the policies and programmes of the BJP-led Centre are unplanned and ill-timed. Be it demonetization or GST, both were enforced whimsically, which led to major job losses across the country,” Patnaik said.

The BJP promised two crore jobs every year in its 2014 manifesto. Specifically for Odisha, the party had made a committment of 36 lakh jobs in five years. "What happened to all these promises?," Patnaik, a retired Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer said.

Highlighting Odisha’s growth in the past five years, Patnaik said that the State has turned into a manufacturing hub. “Ease of doing business and friendly financial and industrial policies of the Naveen Patnaik-led Government is attracting major investments into Odisha,” he added.
