Sub Junior National Badminton Championships Begins With A Bang In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The 33rd edition of Sub Junior (U15 & U17) National Badminton Championships began today at the Railway Indoor Stadium in Mancheswar here. The event will see 280 boys and 260 girls participating and will draw to an end on December 22.

The Guest of Honour at today's inaugural ceremony was Odisha State Badminton Association President Rohit Pujari. Also present were Badminton Association of India (BAI) Vice President OD Sharma, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy, Convenor of Tournament Committee Rajesh Patil and Organising Committee Secretary Nileen Kumar.

The championship is being organised by the BAI for the under-15 and under-17 age groups. In addition to contestants, their trainers and other officials, the Championship will witness a footfall total of about 700.

The event will witness 52 budding badminton stars that have already showcased their talent at international level. Among them are local stars Swetaparna Panda (U15 Girls) and Ayush Pattnaik (U17 Boys) who are raring to shine on their local turf. These two will have direct entry for the main league of doubles and mixed doubles. Apart from these two, 22 other Odia players have been selected.

A budget of Rs 2 crore has been allotted for this event and as per the guidelines of BAI, a prize of Rs 10 lakhs will be given to the winner. In U17 category, singles winner will receive Rs 44,000 and for doubles and mixed doubles prize money of Rs 46,000 has been announced. Similarly, for U15 category singles winner will receive Rs 42,000 and for doubles and mixed doubles prize money of Rs 44,000 has been announced.
