Bhubaneswar: Skill development of jail inmates and improvement of prison infrastructure are the priority areas of newly appointed Additional DG Prisons and Correctional Services, Satyajit Mohanty.

In an exclusive interview to OMMCOM NEWS, Mohanty said that his focus would be to provide best opportunities for skill development of convicts and UTPs in prisons across the State.

"The inmates after spending considerable time in the prison, get cut-off from the mainstream and a sense of detachment cultivates in many of them. Our focus would be to improve the current facilities available in the prisons which can help them upgrade their skills," Mohanty said.

"Our efforts will be to transform the inmates into productive citizens and enable them earn a decent livelihood after being released from the jail," he added.

This apart, securing the jail premises with technology, CCTV, better surveillance and manpower, will be Mohanty's priority. "If we get to know that people in the jails use cellphones, consume or traffic contrabands, strict action would be initiated against the people involved," he said.

E-prisons and video-conferencing facility will be another focus area. "Apart from 24-hour CCTV surveilance, we will work towards integration of jails with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). These facilities can help production of an UTP in the court over video-conferencing," Mohanty added.
