Bhubaneswar: Protest against "anti-labour, anti-people and anti-national policies" of the Central government can only be termed successful when the people take to streets in large numbers. But, what if adults are not enough in number to pull this off? The trade unions have found a solution for this problem and have made use of children for the success of its two-day nationwide general strike.

In what can be termed as an appalling site, young boys were seen taking part in protest rallies and shouting slogans. They also staged picketing on main roads of the capital city holding red flags with the Communist symbol. Functioning very efficiently by mimicking the actions of the adults, the young children were also seen halting cars and two-wheelers from reaching their destination. Some minors were also spotted roaming around with deflated cycle tyres and putting it as a ‘garland of shame’ on the necks of people those who were driving around to reach their office.

While speculations are rife that the children have been paid a meager amount to do this, many also rubbished the rumors and said that the kids were sons of daily wage labourers and are doing this willingly to supports their parents’ demands. While holidays were declared for schools in view of the bandh, little did authorities know that the decision would prove to be counter-productive as young minds took to streets.

Ten trade unions who have jointly called for the nationwide general strike are INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, AICCTU, TUCC, UTUC, LPF and SEWA. Farmers too joined road jam, demonstration, protest meetings throughout the country to register their disenchantment with the government and its policies.

Public sector employees, unorganised sector workers, port and dock workers, bank and insurance employees have also participated in the protest march against growing economic crisis, price rise and acute unemployment. Agitators staged demonstrations, rasta roko and rail roko, especially in the rural parts of the State.
