Jharsuguda: In an inhuman act, a 52-year-old woman named Indira Meher was dumped into a coal wagon by his son. After shivering in cold for 2 wintry nights, the hapless woman was spotted by some railway staff at Jharsuguda station and was rescued. But she died on Monday leaving behind a trail of neglect and ruthless behaviour of her son.

“She was spotted by some railway staff members and then we rescued her. She had clearly stated that she was dumped in the wagon by her son and then asked to be taken to the old age home. We made the necessary arrangements for her transport and then she was hospitalised by the authorities of the Swabhimaan Gruha,” informed T.Naik, Station Master, Jharsuguda Railway Station.

Notably, Indira lived with her son in Gumudera area of Belpahada College Pada in Jharsuguda. Her husband had abandoned her 15 years ago for another woman. She had single-handedly brought up her kids. Both her daughters were married off and the son was to be married very soon.

The son had left his mother in an old age home named “Swabhimaan Gruha” just before his marriage to avoid societal pressures and had promised to take her back once he got married. But he never came back to take her.

Meanwhile, she got ill and the old age home authorities had her admitted in the Jharsuguda DHH.

“We informed the son that she wanted to go back to him. He came and took the mother. But we never even had thought in dreams that he would mete out such ruthless behaviour to his own mother who had given birth to him. He should be duly punished,” said Anandini Padhi, Head, Swabhimaan Gruha.

The old woman was taken away from the comforts of Swabhimman Home and thrown away in a coal wagon stationed at Jharsuguda Railway Station where she laid still in hunger and shivered in cold before being rescued by the railway authorities.

The old mother got admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon and was not even in a condition to speak out her ordeal. The hatred and neglect meted out by her son had left her heart broken.

Meanwhile, when the Swabhimaan authorities called her son and accused him of negligence, he denied all allegations and said that he had no idea of his mother’s whereabouts or who took her to the train wagon. He even said them to do whatever they wished to do against him.

The Swabhimaan authorities decided to file an FIR against the son so that the ailing mother gets justice, but on Tuesday, she breathed her last.

The Hospital authorities have registered a complaint with the police and want the accused to be nabbed as soon as possible.

“We have started our investigation and will find out the truth behind her death only after proper enquiry,” informed R.Prakash, SP, Jharsuguda.
