Servitors 'Assault' Devotees In Puri Jagannath Temple

Puri: A shocking incident came to light after a injured devotee allege that the main temple servitor attacked him and his wife over donation when they went to offer their prayer inside the Shri Jagannath Temple here on Sunday early morning.

The devotee was identified as Chetan Amolkar of Thane, Maharashtra.

Chetan was allegedly attacked by two servitors at the Srimandir after the former refused to pay requisite ‘Dakshina’ (donation) as per the demand. He has sustained injuries in neck and right hand in the attack.

As per a complaint lodged at the Singhadwara police station, Chetan and his wife had gone to temple to seek blessings of to deities this morning when two servitors demanded Rs 1,000 or Rs 501 as donation. When Chetan refused to pay, the servitors pushed his wife which he objected. The two servitors allegedly tried to snatch a gold chain from Chetan’s neck in which he sustained injuries.

Chetan said, “I have lodged an FIR at the Singhadwara police station. The two servitors have been identified. But action against them is yet to taken yet”.

Singhadwara IIC Gokula Ranjan Das said, “A case has been registered on basis of the complaint and we are investigating into the matter”.
