Puri: A blanket ban on chewing of tobacco products and paan on the premises of Puri Jagannath Temple has been extensively welcomed by servitors and devotees alike.

It is welcome step initiated by the Temple Management which will restrict ‘Sevayats’ and public in general from carrying or consuming tobacco products in the temple, a group of senior priests said here.

"Entering the temple with paan and gutka in mouth, it painted an utterly bad picture. It is a holy place and we all should abide by the new law to keep our ancient shrine neat and clean," they added.

"It is against our tradition to chew gutka or paan inside the temple. Therefore this step has been welcome by one and all. More awareness is needed to make everyone conscious and responsible," a group of Servitors said.
