Septic Tank Asphyxiation Kills Five In Odisha's Rayagada, One Critical

Rayagada: Panic gripped Bisamcuttack area after five persons including a girl died of suffocation in a septic tank full of sewage in Durgi's Paikasahi village here today morning.

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 10 am today when a young girl named Rashmita Urlaka fell deep into an uncovered septic tank while playing volleyball near it. In order to rescue her, five of her friends dived in and were also stuck in the sewage tank that was filled with toxic gases and was devoid of oxygen.

After hearing muffled screams for help, locals rescued the six persons in an asphyxiated condition and rushed them to a private hospital nearby. Five of them died while undergoing treatment while one is still in a critical condition.

Including Rashmita Urlaka, the four youths who died while rescuing her are Surya Narayan Patra, Bansidhar Patra, Purna Takiri and Bairagi Kalaka. The youth who still undergoing treatment has been identified as Kartika Gouda.

Expressing deep grief over the incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families. The Odisha CM announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of the kin of the deceased in this unfortunate incident.
