Jajpur: All government and private schools in Korai, Danagadi and Sukinda blocks of Jajpur district have been closed for a day on Friday as a wild tusker has unleashed a reign of terror in the areas.
The tusker had yesterday caused widespread damage to property at Sankhachila village in Korai and had also trampled two persons to death while two others were injured. When forest officials tried to ward off the elephant, it turned aggressive and started running hither and thither attacking people and creating panic in the area.
In order to avoid any untoward situation and ensure safety of school-going children, Jajpur Collector Ranjan Kumar Das first issued an order to close all Anganwadi Centres and schools in Korai block. Later, today morning he issued the order to close all Anganwadi Centres and schools in both Danagadi and Sukinda blocks.
Reportedly, the elephant from Harichandanpur-Telkoi Reserve Forest in Keonjhar had ventured into Salijanga village of Danagadi block in search of food. Along with causing excessive damage to property, it had killed a man in the area and injured a woman severely.
As forest officials attempted to ward it off, the tusker entered Pataranga and Ragadi villages under Korai block. It again went on a damaging spree in the locality and later ventured into Tikarpada village under Rasulpur block of the district.
From there it moved on into Sankhachila village in Korai and besides killing two persons, injured other two. Yesterday night, when forest officials tried to ward it off, it again moved into Danagadi block.
While forest officials are attempting to keep it away from human habitat areas, the Anganwadi centres and schools have been closed as a safety measure.
