Bhubaneswar: Heavy school bags are a burden for school going children. Carrying heavy weighted and oversized school bags full of heavy books can cause young children to develop serious spinal deformities. Researchers have stated that children carrying heavy school bags are developing forward head posture as they are hinging forward at the hips to compensate for the heavy weight on their back.

The Odisha Government on Thursday laid down norms pertaining to the school bags which is a step towards reducing this burden on children. Minister for School and Mass Education Samir Ranjan Dash today said that District Collectors have been asked to implement these rules in letter and spirit by all schools in their area.

"I will personally visit different districts and hold discussions with Collectors and Department officials to verify the implementation of these guidelines. The verification and adherance should start from day one (today)," he said. These are not new rules. Even the Central Government has given stress to ensure that school bags should not be heavy for the students, he added.
