Bhubaneswar: Rita Sahu, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate who won the bye-election from Bijepur Assembly constituency today created an all-time record by clinching the highest ever margin of votes over her nearest rival in the history of elections held till date for any seat of the Odisha Assembly.
Earlier, the record of having polled the highest ever margin of votes over one's nearest rival in the history of elections held for any seat of the State Assembly was held by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP)'s senior leader and current Governor of Andhra Pradesh Biswabhusan Harichandan.
Harichandan had secured a margin of 94,554 votes over his nearest rival in the election from the Bhubaneswar assembly seat in the year 2000.
Sahu by securing a margin of 97,990 votes over her nearest rival Sanat Kumar Gartia of the BJP has broken Harichandan's record and has created an all-time record in the annals of elections held for any seat of the State Assembly so far.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today congratulated Sahu over telephone for her victory as well as for creating a record in the election history of Odisha Assembly.
The by-election in Bijepur was necessitated after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who had contested and won from two segments in the 2019 Assembly polls, vacated Bijepur and retained Hinjili in Ganjam district.
