Relief For Abhijit Iyer Mitra: Odisha Govt Accepts Appeal, All Cases To Be Withdrawn

04 December 2018

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government today decided to withdraw cases against Delhi-based journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra. Iyer had earlier appealed to the State Government to consider his apology over certain unceremonious remarks which he had made over Twitter.

These remarks had hurt the sentiments of people across the State. Besides, he had also cast unparliamentary remarks on Odisha MLAs for which a breach of privilege was initiated in the Assembly against him.

However, the Odisha Legislative Assembly House Committee had accepted his apology and exonerated him of the charges on November 16.

Today, the Home Department issued a notification which stated, "Taking into account his representation, the Government has decided not to accord sanction of prosecution in cases where prosecution has been sought for and also decided to withdraw other cases pending against him following laid-down procedures."

Iyer had appealed to the Government to consider his unconditional apology in having hurt sentiments of Odisha unintentionally "without haing malice or mal-intent". The senior scribe who is also a defence analyst was arrested by the Odisha Police on October 23.
