Bhubaneswar: Commuters proceeding to Puri for Rath Yatra had to cough up toll at Pipili toll-gate on July 4. The same rule will apply for the commuters who head to the Pilgrim Town for 'Bahuda' and 'Suna Besha' on July 12 and 13 respectively.
This is because the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has turned down an appeal made by the State Government to waive of toll tax at the Pipili toll gate on three important days of the Car festival.
"At a coordination meeting, the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) had requested the NHAI not to collect toll during the Rath Yatra. However, the proposal was not approved by the NHAI," a senior official of Puri district administration said.
Clarifying its stand, the NHAI had stated that there was no such provision for providing free access to commuters on such festive occasions. The toll plaza at Pipili is being operated by a private contractor through competitive bidding.
