Bhubaneswar: A day after resigning as the Chairman of Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation, former Minister Raghunath Mohanty quit the Biju Janata Dal today and handed over his resignation to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Citing personal reasons, he has quit the primary membership of the BJD.

“I am tendering my resignation from Primary Membership as well as Vice President of Biju Janata Dal, Odisha, Bhubaneswar for the personal reason,” the letter mentions. Speculations are rife that Mohanty was upset over being denied a party ticket to contest the upcoming polls.

Mohanty was the MLA from Basta Constituency in Balasore during the term 2009-2014 and had represented the seat for five consecutive terms since 1990. It is notable to mention here that he had been arrested in 2013 after his daughter-in-law filed a police complaint alleging dowry torture. The family got into a battle in court which ended when Mohanty's son and his daughter-in-law came to a compromise.

Following his arrest, Mohanty resigned from the ministry and he was suspended from the primary membership of the BJD. In 2018, Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik reappointed Raghunath Mohanty as the party's vice-president and gave him the charge of Life Irrigation Corporation.
