Nabarangpur: The Government of India’s Janani Suraksha Yojana, which aims to reduce neo-natal and maternal deaths by promoting delivery of babies in government hospitals, is far for successful with reports of deliveries on the road continuing to pour in, more so in Odisha, where a spate of such on-road pregnancies have been reported of late.
The recent update comes from Nabarangpur district, when a pregnant woman of Korlasoda village delivered a baby boy, while on her way to the hospital on a cot carried by her family on Sunday.
The family claim they called the 102 ambulance service over phone, but the ambulance didn’t turn up, and forced by the woman’s labour pain, her family had no other option but to carry her to the nearby hospital in the wooden cot she was lying in.
Whether failure of the ambulance in reaching the village was due to gross negligence or because of bad roads is still a mystery. Few villagers believe it could be the latter, in which case the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana cannot be termed a success as it too contributes to such a situation.
