Puri Visually-Impaired Girl's Rapist, Murderer Awarded Lifer

Bhubaneswar: The First Class Additional District and Sessions Judge on Friday pronounced the much awaited verdict on the brutal rape and murder of a visually impaired minor girl near Puri in 2013. The horrifying incident had sent shock waves across the region, provoking huge public outrage.

After thoroughly analyzing all the evidences as well as the statement of all the witnesses, judge Subhdarshi Pattnaik, awarded life imprisonment to the convict who has been identified as Banamali Barik of Kalika Nuapada under Chandanpur police limits near Puri.

The deceased girl’s father Gauranga Patra, her grandmother and her siblings were also present in the court room when the judgement was pronounced.

The incident had occurred on June 5, 2013 when the visually impaired minor girl was alone at home. Taking advantage of this, Barik barged into her house and forcefully took her to a nearby cashew orchard where he first raped and later killed her. After committing the crime, he fled from the scene leaving the minor girl in lurch, who later died due to excessive bleeding.

The police had recovered the girl’s body from the crime spot, lying in a pool of blood. Barik was nabbed soon and a case of murder was registered against him under Sections 376, 366, 364 of the IPC.
