Puri: Representatives of the State Government and district administration on Tuesday selected river mouth at ‘Banki Muhana’ to develop the first ever sand-art park of the country in the pilgrim town.

A team of officials led by Tourism and Culture Department Secretary Mona Sharma surveyed the site and discussed modalities of the proposed park.

The matter for selection of site for the sand art park was under purview for a long time. Odisha has acquired a unique distinction in the field of sand-art. The State Government has decided to initiate measures to popularise the art in a larger scale, Sharma said.

The site will have facilities like a multi-layer parking to accommodate the vehicles of the visitors. “To transform Puri beach into a model ‘Swachh’ beach we may engage more contractors or equip the existing agency with additional apparatus and financial support,” Sharma added.

Puri District Magistrate, Arvind Agarwal said, while the Tourism Department will maintain the park, the district administration will be responsible for the maintenance and day-to-day activities.

“The park will include a workshop, where training on sand art will be conducted, apart from permanent display of sand sculptures featuring an array of themes all through the year,” Agarwal said.

The park should have maximum visibility and located close to the city. The proposed park will draw a large number of tourists from around the world, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik said.
