Puri: Prior to the elections there was a lot of speculations over Prime Minister Narendra Modi contesting from Puri parliamentary seat. Though all guesstimates came to rest after Modi chose Varanasi again, Puri's battle will be no less than a high voltage contest.

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra and Odisha Congress spokesperson Satya Prakash Nayak will lock horns with sitting BJD MP and senior Supreme Court Lawyer Pinaki Mishra. All three of them filed their nominations on Thursday amid show of strength.

Mishra seeking a third term is apparently the most prominent face of BJD in the National Capital. A close confidante of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Pinaki has been BJD's troubleshooter when matters pertaining to National politics or parliamentary affairs crop up.

"I would express deepest gratitude to the Chief Minister for vouching on my candidature. I will work hard to win with a sizeable margin and live up to my party president's expectations," he said.

"There are seven Vidhan Sabha seats in Puri, out of which we (BJD) lost out on one. This time all our units will work with greater vigour to clinch victory in all seven assembly seats," Mishra added.

Nayak joined politics giving up journalism when he was at the peak of his career. "I felt it was high time to reach out to people physically and serve them," he had said after joining Congress in August 2018.

"Puri needs a change. There is current disposition which has represented the constituency has not done justice to the mandate. It will be contest between assurance and betrayal. I commit to justify the expectations of the people of this Holy Town," said Nayak.

"Puri will witness an election like never before. The fight will not be between party and symbols. It will be a contest of principles versus showbiz," added Nayak.

Patra on the other hand stirred the hornet's nest, after launching campaign with Lord Jagannath's idol. There was a hue and cry over the issue. "Puri needs Parivartan. There is goondaraj here and the people of this holy land are fed up with the local leadership," he said. "This election, the 'Lotus' will bloom in Puri," Patra added.
