Printing Of Train Tickets In Odia Language Deferred In View Of Election Code Of Conduct Violation

01 April 2019

Bhubaneswar: With Model Code of Conduct in force, the Railways has decided to defer the printing of train tickets in Odia language to sometime after the General Elections 2019.

A decision had been taken that train tickets would be made available in the vernacular language Odia, apart from Hindi and English, with effect from April 1 that is celebrated as 'Utkala Dibasa'. It is celebrated in the memory of the formation of Odisha as a separate province on 1 April 1936.

With elections in the purview, the decision to implement this has been deferred so as to not violate the Model Code of Conduct.

It said the database of more than 8,000 station names in Odia Script had been prepared by ECoR with technical support from CRIS, Kolkata as a passenger-friendly initiative.

Steps have already been taken to print the station name in Odia script to match with the vernacular name of the station as per the local language of that particular area of the country.

The train tickets having Odia script would be applicable for unreserved tickets bought manually from the Railway counters in Odisha, a statement said.
