Bhubaneswar: Helmetless bikers were taken by surprise by Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty today as instead of penalising them for violating traffic norms, he gifted them with one free helmet each to create awareness on road safety.

Around 200 helmets were distributed by Mohanty at AG Square here as part of the campaign 'Wear Helmet, Ride Safely'. The campaign was sponsored by Rapido Bike Taxi, a Bengaluru-based start-up.

Talking to mediapersons, Mohanty said, "This is an awareness programme to inform people that they should wear helmet for their safety and not for fear of incurring penalty." He thanked Traffic ACP Anup Kanungo and the sponsors for their efforts.

City Manager of Rapido Bike Taxi, Sibasish Rath, informed that they are planning to organise such campaigns at different places in coming days. The move was also appreciated by the helmet beneficiaries.
