Bhubaneswar: In the wake of Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal’s tweet on Odisha’s Talcher cave-in incident last night, local BJD MLA today came down heavily on the Minister’s such a response dubbing it unfortunate and eyewash.

In his media reactions on the day, Talcher (BJD) MLA Braja Kishore Pradhan commented, “The Central Government has a usual habit of shedding crocodile tears. Will the Hon’ble Union Coal Minister make it clear if he has responded to the repeated letters written for backfilling and sand-stowing?”

He alleged, “Despite mining and excavation of coal for years together and since long in our area, the MCL authorities are not backfilling the excavated coal mines. Sand should be filled in by pneumatic hydraulic system. But it has been forgotten by the MCL authorities.”

“When an earthquake zone is between Bhubaneswar to Talcher via Dhenkanal, we are yet to know about the mystery behind not filling those excavated coal mines in Talcher area. Notice of the MCL CMD has been drawn several times during the various meetings. He always assures, but to no avail,” he remarked.

He lambasted, “The Central Government is earning royalty to a tune of several crores of rupees from Talcher area, but gives in return nothing. It is extremely unfortunate to note the way the Hon’ble Union Coal Minister has tweeted today.”

Following such an unfortunate incident a Talcher resident named Sambit Dash tweeted, “We have seen much deeper craters earlier, Champapasi being the high risk area. Vast swathes of that area of Talcher are sitting on tinder box.”

Another Talcher resident Sanjay Pradhan has also claimed to have seen much deeper craters two decades back. “This was when the Deulbera and Champasi underground mines were operational. The risks then were far-reaching,” Pradhan averred.

Notably, the @PiyushGoyal tweet reads: “Shri @dpradhanbjp conveyed his concerns about reports of sudden caving in of land in Talcher, Odisha affecting some residential houses. Ordered a fact finding enquiry by team of experts from DGMS, CMPDIL & MCL on the incident urgently. Interests of local community paramount.”

As the the formation of the crater came to light yesterday in Talcher area, it has created panic and fear in there. The locals alleged that authorities of MCL had not filled the now defunct Champapasi underground coal mines with backfilling and sand stowing due to which the craters had been formed.
