Bhubaneswar: As the State Government has mandated and the State Police Headquarters has directed the Special Task Force (STF) to go all out against NDPS cases for which the blue print has been issued, STF’s performance is stated to be encouraging this year following the arrest of 550 accused nabbed.
Convening a press meet, Odisha Crime Branch (CB)’s Special Task Force (STF) SP Rahul PR said, “The performance of STF in 2019 is very encouraging. Till now around 550 persons so far have been arrested in 2019 in NDPS cases, mainly ganja smuggling and brown sugar peddling cases. Also some other cases like illegal sale of banned cough syrup and sedative drugs. The cases registered are very impressive. It’s definitely improvement over the last year.”
He added, “Around 271 ganja cases have been caught. 180 quintals of ganja have already been seized by Odisha Police in various districts and also STF. As far as brown sugar is concerned, the figure is 631 grams for the year and 40 cases registered. And, 58 persons have been arrested in the brown sugar cases.”
He also stated, “Brown sugar is basically concentrated around the urban area, especially capital region. It’s well-known to you about the STF’s action on the Khurda area. We have already briefed about that some culprits were into other organized crimes. One was illegal narcotics business.”
He further informed, “The Government’s mandate is to go behind such nexus. Initially good success has been obtained. Around 130 grams of brown sugar was seized two weeks back. Three persons, who were habitual carriers, were arrested. Now our team has launched its operation to arrest the drugs carriers and main dealers. In the end of last month, one team engaged in exchange of fire with STF. Subsequently some big players have been arrested. Some have surrendered in the court. Chhota of Khurda area was one of the important wholesale dealers. He is the biggest dealer in the State. After his surrender, we brought him on remand and subsequently legal action followed,”
“Later on, the other districts and Commissionerate Police have also registered some cases. Overall there is a drive and there is a clear directive from the Government and State Police Headquarters. DGP has also directed us to go all out against NDPS cases. Blue print has been issued by the State Police Headquarters and accordingly our action is on. It includes busting the entire chain, starting from the source to the distribution points targeting big players, confiscating all proceeds of crime and quality investigation,” stated the STF SP.
