Cuttack: Taking cognizance of the viral video of a woman attendant allegedly thrashing a patient at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, a delegation of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) visited the hospital on Wednesday.

The OHRC team led by Asim Amitabh Das visited the destitute ward of the hospital and recorded statement of eyewitnesses. The team observed there is a lack of coordination between the outsourcing staff, including security and attendant, working at the hospital.

Das informed that while the accused attendant has refuted the allegations, an investigation in this regard will be conducted and action will be taken accordingly. He asserted that the patient may be mentally ill but no one has the right to beat him.

The Hospital Superintendent and Emergency Officer have been given some suggestions regarding the stay of the patient at the ward, how to treat him, and to change the security. The hospital authorities have been asked to implement the suggestions at the earliest.

Destitute Attendant Supervisor of the hospital also refuted the allegations that the attendant has thrashed the patient. She said that as the mentally ill patient attacked the attendant she just shoved him with a rod to save herself. However, the attendant has been dismissed after receiving the complaint against her, she added.
