Balangir: Punjilal Meher, the alleged mastermind of the parcel bomb tragedy in Bolangir’s Patnagarh which claimed two lives, was released today based on the granted interim bail of four days by the Odisha High Court to perform the post-funeral rites of his mother who had passed away a few days ago.
He has been cooling heels behind the bars of Patnagarh Sub-Jail. Punjilal’s mother had been suffering from cancer and breathed her last at Balangir DHH on January 10. He had applied for a bail then.
Notably, Punjilal had allegedly planned and executed the parcel bomb crime as a lone wolf in which newly-married techie Soumya Sekhar Sahu and his grandmother Jemamani were killed. His wife Reema had got seriously injured and later recovered at Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital after months-long treatment.
He was arrested owing to a probe by the Crime Branch.
It is important to note here that the interim bail comes with its set of conditions where the local police have been asked to keep an eye on him and he has been asked to report to ADJ court after completion of four days. Punjilal has his regular bail hearing on January 31.
With security concerns in mind, district police have heightened police presence in the vicinity of both Punjilal’s and Soumya’s residences.
