Bhubaneswar: Locals have expressed their anger over yesterday’s caving in of a portion of the flyover on the national highway (NH) 16 in Palasuni area of the Capital City.

Blaming poor quality work for the incident, locals have threatened to launch an agitation if the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) authorities and government fail to take appropriate action.

“We won’t hold the government responsible for the incident. It is the NHAI which is responsible. It’s because of substandard work by the contractor,” said Braja Swain, a local resident.

“If the government fails to undertake proper repair of the damaged flyover, villagers of 62 villages adjoining it will resort to agitation. We will paralyze movement of vehicles on the NH,” he added.

Another local had the same allegation that it was poor quality work which was responsible for the incident.

“The contractor firm is to blame. Its poor quality work, thank God there was no accident; otherwise precious lives would have been lost. We had blocked the road yesterday but after persuasion by the police we had lifted the blockade,” said Manoranjan Khatua, a local of Palasuni area.

“Crores are being spent from the state exchequer. This is a clear case of corruption. Our lives are in danger. Anything can happen any moment. If proper action is not taken to repair the damaged section we will resort to agitation. This is second such incident on this flyover,” said Santosh Rath, a local shopkeeper.

Meanwhile, the damaged portion of the flyover has been repaired with cement mortar and remains barricaded while traffic has been diverted on the left lane.

However, no NHAI officials were available for their comments on the matter.

Notably, a section of the flyover on the NH 16 sank near Palasuni in the Capital City had sank yesterday creating a crater. The incident had created panic among the commuters.
