Over 10 Lakh Winged Guests Counted At Chilika

Bhubaneswar: The bird count in Chilika came to 10,47,968 with 181 species habituating the brackish water lake in this migratory season.

Among the winged guests are, 10,21,563 waterfowl of 105 species and 26,405 water dependent birds of 76 species.

Last year the bird count in Chilika was 8,93,390 with 147 species (8,67,834 waterfowl of 95 species and 25,556 water dependent of 52 species).

In Nalabana, total 3,93,541 have been enumerated. Last season, the number of birds in Nalabana was 3,20,826.

“The increase in number is due to availability of open space after eviction of gherries, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Sandeep Tripathi said.
